I got this picture at a yard sale in Oregon visiting Mom many years back. The fishermen are watching the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. It has always struck me as a beautiful metaphor for teaching. Teaching bridges the gap from unknown to known, unable to able, from where one is to where one wants to go. As with the builders of the Golden Gate, we start with a goal, a plan. This is followed by a string of intermediate steps. How long this string is, how many intermediate steps there are, depends on how wide the gap, how ambitious the goal.
